Camping in the valley can be done anywhere from a primitive site to a cozy cabin. Most are open to the public, but a few require membership.
- Front Royal-RV Campground, in Front Royal, is open from April 1 through Nov. 1. There are 160 tent/camper sites and 20 cabins. Campers can enjoy a swimming pool, game room, nine-hole miniature golf course, a 350-foot water slide, free Wi-Fi, volleyball, basketball and weekend movies. 635-2741. www.frontroyalcamproud.com
- North Fork Resort, in Front Royal, is a a member-owned, Recreation USA-, Coast-to-Coast- and Passport America-affiliated resort with about 350 camper/tent sites. 636-2995. www.nfra.com
- Skyline Ranch Resort, in Front Royal, features 124 tent/camper sites and eight cabins. The resort is open year-round. Campers can enjoy a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, miniature golf course and shopping in the camp store. The site now offers many functions similar to a western dude ranch. - Gooney Creek Campground, in Front Royal, offers a small, family campground with 46 sites, 26 electric and water sites and four full hookups. The campground is on the banks of Gooney Creek, within walking distance of the Shenandoah River and close to Skyline Drive. Public baths are available. 635-4066. www.gooneycreek.com
- Raymond R. "Andy" Guest Jr. Shenandoah River State Park, in Bentonville, offers 10 campsites on 1,600 scenic acres with nearly six miles of riverfront. The state park also offers hiking, fishing and picnicking. 622-6840. www.dcr.state.virginia.us/parks
- Elizabeth Furnace Family Campground, in the Lee Ranger District of the George Washington National Forest, near Fort Valley, is the historic site of an old iron furnace dating to the 1800s. The campground is open year-round and offers 30 family sites, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis. - Camp Roosevelt, in the Lee Ranger District of the George Washington National Forest, near Edinburg, is the site of the first Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp in the nation. It is open mid-May to mid-October and offers 10 campsites, 15 picnic sites, a picnic shelter, a small playing field, drinking water, flush toilets and a disposal station. 984-4101.www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/lee

- Endless Caverns and RV Resort, in New Market, is open year round and offers 27 RV sites with full hookups, seven non-utility sites and a bathhouse with showers and flush toilets. 896-2283. www.endless.caverns.com
- Fort Valley Horse and Mule Camp, in Fort Valley, offers 18 sites with water and electric hookups, 18 tent sites, three catch-and-release fishing lakes and a sanitation facility. The campground is open from April 1 to Nov. 30, but other activities are open year-round. - Orkney Springs Campground, in Orkney Springs, is a year-round facility with 30 sites. Twenty-four of those sites can accommodate RVs and have water and electric hookups, and 12 of those also have septic hookups. - Battle of Cedar Creek Campground, near Middletown, has 46 RV sites and 20 to 25 sites for tents. Amenities include a swimming pool and horseshoe pits. Cedar Creek is ideal for fishing and boating, but rentals are not available. The site is year-round for RVs and campers only; tents are allowed April 16-Oct. 31. 869-1888
- Candy Hill Campground, in Winchester, is open year-round and has 100 sites. Amenities include a recreation room with billiards and games, shuffleboard, restrooms, a laundry facility, a store, a gift shop, a swimming pool and basketball and volleyball courts. A trolley and pavilion are available for use by camping clubs. All roads are paved and bicycling is allowed between dawn and dusk. 662-8010. www.candyhill.com
- The Cove Campground, at 980 Cove Road, on Va. 704 south of Gore, is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day and weekends year-round. The campground offers a beach volleyball court, and mountain biking trails. ATVs and off-road motorcycles are permitted year-round. The 3,000-acre campground has 125 sites for tents, campers and RVs. Cabins are available for rent. The Cove's three lakes are open for swimming, fishing and boating. Amenities include a picnic area, a shelter, restrooms, rifle and archery ranges and hiking trails. - Log Cabin Campground, in Cross Junction, has 30 sites for tents and 30 for campers and RVs. Amenities include restrooms, a bath house, an RV dump station, a group picnic area, a playground and three meeting places. Propane also is available. 888-3461. www.thelogcabincampground.com
