Cycling: Cyclists have plenty of places to go
If nature is most beautiful to you when you're whizzing by on a bicycle, you're in luck.
Clarke County
- The Clarke County Park, at 255 Al Smith Circle, Berryville, has a 1.8 mile walking trail also used for biking. 955-5140
Frederick County/Winchester
- Winchester's Green Circle will be several miles long when completed, maybe as early as Thanksgiving. It now offers about a mile of trail at the Meadow Branch subdivision off of Jubal Early Road.
- Valley Avenue in Winchester is among the streets that has a dedicated bike lane.
- Jim Barnett Park, at Cork Street across from Daniel Morgan Middle School in Winchester, has about five miles of trails.
- Frederick Douglas Park, at 598 N. Kent St., Winchester, has a .33-mile path.
- Park Place, off Harvest Drive, Winchester, has a .25-mile trail.
- Local touring and mountain bicycle enthusiasts have the support of the Winchester Wheelmen, an organization that sponsors various levels of riding experiences throughout the year and has a detailed list of trails in the area on its Web site.www.winchesterwheelmen.org
- On Red Bud Road in northern Frederick County, where the Third Battle of Winchester took place, there are trails that feature interpretative signs.
- Sherando Park, at 185 South Warrior Drive, Stephens City, has a 2.45-mile trail that begins and ends at Sherando High School.
Shenandoah County
- The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests have thousands of miles of roads and trails featured in guides available at local bike shops. 984-4101
Warren County/Front Royal
- The town has a variety of locations where biking is allowed, and it is working on an interconnected system to be called the Royal Shenandoah Gateway. 635-5788
- Mountain bikers can ride the many trails in the George Washington National Forest, Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. One event this year, Tour de Skyline Drive, runs 88 miles between Aug. 22-23 and is open for registration until Aug. 17. www.tourdeskylinedrive.org
